A Guide to Fertigation Systems

Fertigation is the application of water combined with liquid fertilizer on growing plants and trees through an irrigation system. Surface, drip, and sprinkler irrigation systems are used to dispense the combined liquids.

These irrigation systems are chosen according to the size, growing patterns, root systems, and water requirements of the plants they irrigate, as well as the composition and drainage rate of the soil where they are planted.

A fertigation system operates as any other irrigation system and trees and plants readily absorb the combined liquids. Water and liquid fertilizer can be combined and used on a schedule that is most beneficial for the specific vegetation being irrigated. For convenience, water and a diluted-strength liquid fertilizer can be used every time trees and plants are irrigated.

This post explains a few of the different fertigation systems and some things you should consider when designing a fertigation system for your trees and plants.

Surface Fertigation

This irrigation system uses gravity to deliver water and liquid fertilizer to growing plants and trees. Water is pumped to the highest point of a field and then released to flow down to the lower parts of the field.

Liquid fertilizer can be held in a storage tank at the top of the field where it is combined with irrigation water before it is released. A valve can be installed on the fertilizer tank so that it can be manually or automatically turned off and on.

Drip Fertigation

This irrigation system uses flexible tubing and drip emitters to deliver water and liquid fertilizer to the soil’s surface at each plant’s base. One advantage of a drip irrigation system is that is can operate continuously to keep moisture in the soil at a consistent level. It is also less wasteful than other irrigation methods as the liquids are dispensed to specific individual plants.

Liquid fertilizer is combined with the water in a drip irrigation system at the water source. Pressure regulators are installed on drip irrigation systems to keep the drip rate slow and consistent.

Sprinkler Fertigation

This irrigation system uses buried water pipes and upright sprinkler heads to irrigate and fertilize trees and plants. Some systems use sprinklers mounted on a moving platform that travels within a planted field to irrigate and fertilize it. A sprinkler system is beneficial to those plants that like a moist environment and thrive with moisture on their leaves and stems.

Manual Fertigation

This irrigation system is usually used for landscaped residential properties and small gardens. This hand-watering system is good for small planter boxes, flower and vegetable beds, and container gardens. It allows the user to water each plant individually and apply the liquids in the best location for each plant.

The water is usually combined with liquid fertilizer in a small tank at the water source. Liquid fertilizer can also be poured into a hose-end sprayer and dispensed with water as it exits the hose.

When adding liquid fertilizer to any irrigation system, it is important to use a backflow prevention device on the system to prevent the liquid fertilizer from flowing back into the water supply. Backflow prevention devices are simple mechanisms that can be attached to the system where liquid fertilizer is combined with water.

What Irrigation System Is Right for You?

There are two main methods that farmers use to water their plants. The first is to allow nature to do all the work, which is called rain-fed farming. The other method is to use irrigation.

When trying to pick an irrigation system, there are many different factors you must look at to decide what is best for you. Here are a few common irrigation systems that might be what you are looking for.

Surface Irrigation

For thousands of years, humans have been using surface irrigation for farming. There are four main stages that make up surface irrigation: advanced phase, storage phase, depletion phase and recession phase. Surface irrigation has often been called flood irrigation.

The advance phase is the time period in which the water starts at the top of the field and runs to the bottom, where it will either drain or begin to pool. The time that the water sits on the field in a pond while water is still being added is called the storage phase. Once the field is completely submerged and no more water is being added, this is the depletion phase. After that, when the water is draining from the field, is the recession phase.

It is important to know if your plants are able to be completely submerged. Some plants require very little water, while other require a lot. Though surface irrigation is generally better for smaller areas, it provides a lot of water to your plants in a short amount of time.

Drip Irrigation

If you are farming in an area where water is hard to come by, drip irrigation might work well for you. It is a form of micro-irrigation designed to save water. By placing the water down closer to the roots, you are able to minimize evaporation. Because you are applying the water close to the roots, you also reduce the number of weeds in your fields.

Drip irrigation is also great in areas where your field is not level. Because the water is being controlled by pipes, you can have your field follow the shape of the landscape. The pipes that control the water also help with the soil erosion. Over time, you will not have as much water flowing over your soil. With less water flowing, the less you need to worry about soil erosion.

The problem with drip irrigation is the investment cost and maintenance. The pipes required to build a drip system are a little more expensive than a traditional surface irrigation system. You will need to make sure you properly filter your water so there is no sediment built up in your pipes. That being said, drip irrigation systems are a great investment.

Sprinkler Irrigation

When you are dealing with large fields of grass, like golf courses or parks, it is helpful to have a sprinkler system. These are also very common to have in home yards. They work off a series of slightly pressurized buried pipes with sprinkler heads. They use the pressure of the pipes to spray the water out of the heads to water the grass.

A more industrial use of sprinkler irrigation systems is the central pivot irrigation system. This system uses a water wheel to pivot around a field to efficiently water a circular area. Pivot systems are easier to maintain, making them a great choice for large farms.

Why You Can Stick with Overhead Irrigation to Prevent Powdery Mildew

Powdery mildew is a common name for hundreds of different related but different mildews that each target just a few different plants. All of these mildews form a similar white or gray coating on infected leaves and stems, and they all drain nutrients from the plant and block the process of photosynthesis.

It has been common agricultural advice for decades to avoid overhead irrigation techniques in order to control powdery mildew in crops that are sensitive to it. However, it's not actually necessary to switch away from this effective irrigation technique. Learn the facts before making a big investment in a whole new irrigation system.

It’s Hard to Control Mildew and Moisture

As with practically every form of mildew, all powdery mildew diseases require a relatively high humidity level to actively grow and release spores to spread. Overhead watering of any kind, including natural rainfall, does increase the humidity around a plant's leaves and stems for a short amount of time. This has led to both gardening and agricultural sources recommending that only drip and buried irrigation should be used for plants in danger of powdery mildew development.

Yet it's not as simple as keeping moisture away from the leaves. First, you can't control overhead watering that comes from rain unless you're growing in enclosed greenhouses or field hoop houses. Second, moisture from overhead watering evaporates surprisingly quick in an open field, which results in a drop to a safer humidity level soon after watering is complete. Third, applying moisture from the top down during the right part of the day may actually help prevent powdery mildew from growing and spreading rather than encourage it.

Humidity Fluctuations

It's not just high humidity alone responsible for powdery mildew growth. The fungi responsible for plant damage react to humidity cycles rather than just spikes in moisture levels. The disease grows best when there's a lot of evening moisture, such as dew fall on the leaves, and a drying cycle during the day with low humidity levels.

Keeping moisture levels higher as temperatures rise in the morning actually prevents the mildew from growing. This is easily accomplished with overhead irrigation during the morning hours, which also allows noon and afternoon sun and breezes to thoroughly dry out lingering moisture before the sun sets and temperatures drop again.

Surface Water

Aside from affecting the humidity cycle that triggers mildew growth, overhead watering creates a coating of moisture on the surface of the leaf. If it was moisture alone responsible for triggering powdery mildew growth or spread, then growers would see an immediate increase in visible mildew after each watering. Instead, testing shows that a direct coating of moisture on existing mildew colonies prevents spore germination.

Spores usually form on humid nights, so direct water application is of limited use as a control method, but at the very least you can trust that overhead watering during the morning isn't responsible for spreading the disease.

Overhead Irrigation

Since overhead irrigation doesn't automatically cause or help spread powdery mildew, you're free to enjoy its many benefits:

Easy application of chemicals, including fungicides for powdery mildew control, through chemigation
High uniformity of irrigation coverage, resulting in less wasted water and fewer crops lost to stress
Reduced labor costs for maintenance compared to drip and buried irrigation, with maintenance requirements varying between the types of overhead equipment
Easier expansion of the system as establish and plant new fields, including pumps to increase water pressure far from the well
Limited soil erosion, which is often caused by drip or buried irrigation.
